A recent study by ThreatMatrix analyzed the sources of fraudulent online activity, and found that New York City topped the list of the top 5 geographic sources of online fraud.
Top 5 Sources of Online Fraud in the US:
- New York City
- Los Angeles
Larger cities are easy places to steal passwords and identities in bulk.
The ThreatMatrix study reviewed all online activity in the first quarter of 2012, and assigned a low, medium, or high fraud risk to each transaction. High risk transactions were rejected automatically by merchants, and medium risk transactions were manually reviewed. This data was then correlated by city to find the list of the top 5 cities given above.
Could Portland be omitted from this list because of our lower population? It’s certainly not due to having no hackers; the Pacific Northwest is known as the Silicon Forest, one of the more tech-friendly cultures in the world. We at Priority Payments NW would like to think it’s because residents of the Pacific Northwest are, as a rule, nicer than most cyber criminals, so they tend to go elsewhere to make their mischief.
